چکیده

Since the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, a major e€ort has been launched in Canada to identify cost-e€ective measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Agriculture is an important contributor of methane and nitrous oxide in Canada. Over one-third of methane and almost four-®fths of nitrous oxide emissions are from agriculture either directly or indirectly. By 2010 primary agricultural production is expected to generate about 67 megatonne (in carbon dioxide equivalent), which increases to 97 megatonnes if all activities related to agricultural production are considered. Based on a systems approach, nutrient management was selected as a possible scenario for mitigation. Estimated results indicate that this could lead to a reduction of 0.9 megatonnes of GHG emissions at the primary agricultural production level, and 1.2 megatonnes if the total agriculture and food sectors are included. Compared to the direct emissions (from fertilizer rate and timing of application), the systems approach suggests up to a doubling (from 0.4 to 0.92 Mt) of this reduction potential at the primary production level. If one were to include emissions from the entire agriculture and agri-food system, potential of up to tripling (from 0.4 to 1.23 Mt) the reduction of GHG can be achieved. The need of a systems approach in prioritizing measures to reduce GHG emissions is supported by this study. # 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation through Agriculture

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be reduced or atmospheric GHGs sequestered to help reduce the future extent of climate change. Options to do this through agriculture have received increasing attention during the last decade. Some see agriculture as a potential low-cost provider of emission reductions in the near future with additional environmental and income distributional cobenefits. Other...

Soil Carbon Sequestration and Greenhouse Gas mitigation in Agriculture

Agriculture, Forest and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector contributes about a quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emission [1] though its contribution is small in Japan [2]. In addition, technologies to reduce GHGs from agriculture sector are not expensive [3]. It is therefore worth reducing GHGs from this sector. It includes soil carbon (C) sequestration and mitigation of methane (CH4) and Nitr...

Mitigation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Animal Agriculture

Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center Animal agriculture contributes about three percent of all anthropogenic (humancaused) greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. (EPA, 2011). Although this is small relative to other economic sectors such as transportation and energy, animal agriculture is also being called upon to defend its environmental impact and continually demonstrate its comm...
